 Hiking - Spruceton Trail

Spruceton Trail - Blue markers

Junction of truck trail and Spruceton road about 8 miles east of the town of West Kill. Large parking lot at this popular trailhead. To reach this trailhead, take NY 42 north from NY 28 at Shandaken, and turn right on Spruceton road at the flagpole in West Kill; or take NY 42 south from NY 23A at Lexington, and turn left at the flagpole. Spruceton road leads to Diamond Notch trail, making a nice, circular day hike over Hunter Mtn. Trail leaves parking lot on truck trail past barrier.

Junction with old Hunter road at height of land between Rusk Mtn. and Hunter Mtn. Trail turns right.

Spring 300' right of trail on Yellow marked spur trail.

Junction with Shanty Hollow trail, yellow markers to left leads to the Colonel's Chair spur and top of Hunter Mtn Ski Area chair lift.

Hunter Mtn. Fire Tower - great views

Junction with Hunter Mountain Trail (Yellow markers) straight ahead to the Devil's Path, and the Becker Hollow Trail (Blue Markers), left to Rte 214 in Stony Clove. If you look at the rocks at this junction, you can find signs of the original Hunter Mtn fire tower that was here. To the right of the juction is where the lean-to was located until the late 1970's. To the right , a yellow marked trail leads 100 yards to a series of rocky outlooks, wiith some of the finest views in the Catskills (don't miss it!).
